Iceland: Nature vs. Nurture

From ancient ice glaciers to Viking Pagan weddings, the secret and mysterious land known as Iceland has more words to describe it than Led Zeppelin’s “Immigrant Song” has lyrics for.

Pagan was, up until recently, assumed to be a religious cult.  It was easy to watch the foreign couple dressed in leather stitching’s and think how unusual, because I never saw that form of tradition in Texas.  However I was completely mistaken when my Icelandic friends, who’s language alone sounds like no other, explained this form of spirituality as something that is based on the old gods.  It became clear that what appeared to me as some creepy satanic people lighting incense over a stone outside in the misty rain,  was simply another form of commitment for two people in love, an earthly religion.

I learned a lot about love while traveling alone for months – yet this was new.  The ability to see a familiar face in a foreign land and experience such warm emotions.  I was waiting for this moment since I left for New Zealand in 2011; I yearned to explore and grow with someone I trusted.  Sadly the opportunity was ripped away from me, not once, but twice, before departing again on my lonely journey into darkness.  Of course, of all places for this opportunity to arise, it was completely symbolic to New Zealand, and even had the same natural beauty (glaciers, waterfalls and thermal pools) that brought me back to my 21 year old lost self.

As peculiar as love is, it never fails to surprise, and in my most unexpected moment did I realize I was exploring and growing with people I loved – one holistic Norwegian girl and two rowdy Vikings.  Funny how we grow up as children thinking love is a single person who was waiting at a single moment in the future.  However as I have battled many tribulations over the course of this short lifetime I realize now that love, love isn’t a destiny, and there are many soul mates at many points of life for each of us.  Love is boundless and can be found in any single given moment.

So enjoy this moment, and seek love and the good in people above all else.
